A young family

For the first few years of married life, Tony was still in the Navy, so Barbara lived with her parents in Chiswick. She stayed in work for another year and in July 1957 their daughter, Helen, was born. When Tony left the Navy, many towns in the home counties were expanding. As the country recovered from the 2nd World War and rationing ended, the economy grew and these new towns promised much to young Londoners looking for a better life. Basingstoke was one such town. Tony got a job at Lansing Bagnall and together they put a deposit on a new bungalow. They moved there in June 1959, and Barbara's family were so impressed with everything they moved down as well, to a bungalow next door but one. By now, Andrew, was on the way, and arrived in November. He was followed 2 years later by the twins, Tim and Dave. After a while, Tony left Lansing Bagnall and moved to Smiths Industries. To anyone who knows Basingstoke now it's hard to believe that Lansing Bagnall was an inconvenient distance from the Berg Estate, where the family lived. In those days, though, it was a different story and Smiths was close enough for Tony to come home for lunch. The bungalow had a big garden. Tony and Barbara had room for a vegetable plot, as well as somewhere for the kids to play, but it was never easy to tame, especially when Tony injured his back. He was off work for a long time, and often in great pain. It was tough to make ends meet, but he gradually recovered and returned to work. With a growing family, Tony passed his driving test, traded in his motorbike for a Ford Popular and set about exploring the area with the family. There were weekend outings to nearby villages and longer trips to the beach at Bournemouth, or to Tony's parents in Hounslow. These were epic voyages as roads weren't so good and cars so fast as they are today. As the family grew, the Ford was replaced by a Morris Oxford with leather bench seats. It was big enough to take the entire family, including the dog, and in the years to come it was to take the family on some great adventures.
